First Trip to the ER

It was Sunday, April 11th, and we had JUST walked in from church.  Austin was walking to look out the storm door, and he fell.  Nothing was in his way....he just fell.  He cried really hard, and Adam picked him up.  Well, there was blood all over the floor and his mouth.  He had bit through his tongue.  We didn't realize how bad it was at the time, so we carried on by fixing lunch and eating.  Austin ate fine, but he kept sticking his tongue out.  Adam is an EMT, and he was worried, so off to Urgent Care they went.  When they got there, Adam held him down for the doctor to look, and they both saw his tongue was split.  It definitely needed stitches, so off to WakeMed's Children's ER they went. 

This was not a happy camper.  He was hungry, and of course, they wouldn't let him eat.  They had to give him an IV to sedate him.  It took 7 dissolvable stitches to put the tongue back together.  Gross, I know, but this is what happened. 

This is Austin when he was waking up.  Very sleepy, thirsty, and hungry.  It was difficult to get him to stay awake, so he could be discharged.  It's been 2 weeks since this happened, and he's doing great.  The stitches have stayed in, the tongue is healing, and he's eating fine.  We learned that it is very common for children to bite their tongues.  It's something the ER sees all the time.  I hope they don't see us again for this reason.  What a day!
